A healthy community is a sustainable community. When children are healthy, they are less likely to miss school or drop out. And when parents are healthy, their family businesses are more likely to thrive. By offering health education, smoke-free stoves, midwife training, visiting doctor programes, medical supplies, emergency medical treatment and support for the emergency services to developing communities, working closely with local and regional doctors, we’re empowering families to transform their lives and their communities.
SMOKE-FREE STOVES
We recently had the privilege of visiting a remote village in the Cuchumatan mountains in northern Guatemala with the AMOR team. Our mission: to build 11 smoke-free ovens for families in need.
Thanks to a fantastic team of helpers and local masons, our mission was a huge success. The families were self-selected by the villagers themselves, and comprised mainly widows and orphan families. The whole process took 9 days and was a delicious mixture of laughter, heartbreak and inspiration. During our Thanksgiving meal when all the stoves were built the women expressed their deep gratitude for what they saw as a great blessing in their lives.
Such a simple thing can make such a difference in the life of a child or adult, protecting their eye and lung health so that they won´t be prone to pneumonia and even blindness. And the cost is low: just $360 (£225) for 15 years of life for each member of the family.
