Our time in the field gives us a personal view on what it's like to get help for the first time. The mothers, children and communities that we’ve met inspire our ideas and, often times, solutions. Every one of them has a story worth sharing.
The boy carrying his little brother on his back is Antonio Tuy. They are orphans. Their mother died of malnutrition when the baby was just one month old, and the father was mown down by a tractor whilst working in a sugar plantation at night. Antonio has essentially become the father of his younger brother, working day and night to try to feed both of them by shining shoes on the street.
The little girl is Maria and the little boy Santiago. They live with their parents, Maria and Lucas Us, themselves orphaned during the Mayan genocide of the 1980s, in a situation of extreme poverty and suffer from chronic malnutrition. There is little or no work in their village, and so sometimes the father has to leave home for long periods to work in the plantations for inhumane wages.
